The latter years of this decade have been marked by renewed optimism for a safer and more harmonious future in many parts of the Middle East, as nations (especially those in the GCC) collaborate on cross-border transport links, large-scale renewable energy projects, smart city initiatives and, crucially, heightened joint-security strategies.
However, alongside progress towards greater peace and prosperity, there are also inevitable warning signs that both emerging and existing threats are always ready to cause disruption and chaos at a moment’s notice. From the rising threat of increasingly sophisticated cybercrime, to the age-old practice of smuggling drugs and weapons in the furtherance of organised crime and terrorism, the Middle East faces unceasing attacks on their national security.
